If you plan to board a domestic flight or enter a federal building after May 7, 2025, you’ll need more than just your regular driver’s license—you’ll need a REAL ID.
The REAL ID is part of a federal initiative to enhance the security of state-issued identification. Beginning May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require all travelers to present a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights in the United States. In addition to air travel, a REAL ID will be required to enter certain federal facilities, including military bases and federal courthouses.
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets increased security standards established by the federal government. You can recognize a REAL ID by the star at the top of the card, which signifies it meets federal guidelines.
How Do You Get One?
To obtain a REAL ID, you must visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in person. Be sure to bring the required documents with you, which typically include:
- Proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or passport)
- Proof of Social Security number
- Two documents proving state residency (such as utility bills or a lease agreement)
Requirements may vary slightly by state, so it’s a good idea to check your state’s DMV website for a complete list before you go.
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
As the deadline approaches, DMV offices are likely to become busier with individuals rushing to meet the deadline. To avoid long lines and processing delays, it’s smart to schedule your DMV appointment well in advance.
What Happens If You Don’t Have a REAL ID?
If you don’t have a REAL ID by May 7, 2025, you will not be able to use your driver’s license to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings. Instead, you’ll need an alternative form of federally accepted ID, such as a valid U.S. passport or military ID.
Don’t wait. Take Action.
Getting your REAL ID may take a little time and planning, but it’s an important step for your future travel and access to federal facilities. Don’t wait until it’s too late—make an appointment with your DMV and get your REAL ID today.
