Why cheap car insurance can really cost you in the long run.
We’ve all seen the commercials. Save X amount of dollars, in X amount of minutes, with one call. There are radio ads and commercials, left and right, promising to do just that. What are you really saving in the long run by purchasing cheap insurance? It may end up costing you more than any monthly amount promised in savings. Let’s take a look at why.
Many insurance companies offer the promise of saving money and time on your premiums. That is not always a good thing. The main reason is they have to make adjustments somewhere, in order to give you those lower premiums. Many companies do it by lowering your limits to state minimums, increasing your deductible, or excluding coverages you need. Often they are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, in an attempt to sell you a policy. The only way they achieve that is by cutting corners. Shaving off a coverage here, lowering a limit there. This exposes you to a variety of risks, including the possibility of you paying more out of pocket for an accident or injury.
Let’s say that you get into a “fender bender” with a newer vehicle. Years ago, this could have been a minor accident and fairly easily covered by your insurance company. In today’s world though, almost every new car coming on the market has sensors, back up cameras, expensive lighting kits, etc… Suddenly a minor “fender bender” turns into thousands and thousands of dollars, and involves replacing the sensors, cameras and computer systems that control them.
Now, let’s throw injury into the mix! The other driver is hurt, gets a lawyer, and now you’re facing a much higher claim payout. The next thing you know you’re in court or dealing with injuries and claims that your “cheap car insurance” doesn’t cover. Where do you think that extra money that needs to be paid to the injured person will come from? It’s not a secret. It’s going to come from your wallet.
What happens if someone hits you and has state minimum limits, or no insurance at all? What if your car is totaled? What if a family member is injured? The list can go on and on. A state minimum policy will only cover a portion of your loss, leaving you to make up the difference.
The scenarios above happen every day and having cheap car insurance could really cost you more than any amount they promise you’ll save. Our job here at the Dickerson Agency is to make sure that doesn’t happen. We make it our goal to help protect you and your quality of life in the event of a claim. We help you customize your coverage, so you have the right protections in place, at a premium that fits within your budget.
